About Celebrity blogs

Previous Entry Celebrity blogs Aug. 11th, 2005 @ 10:36 am Next Entry
Just had a look at Aamir khan blogging as & for Mangal Pandey
For those who do not know, Aamir is a superstar in Bollywood(Indian hindi cinema).

I feel its a great idea.

Publicity
I agree that the reach of the Internet is not much, just about 2% in India - but that is 20 Million people. And if we are talking of "Celebrity blogs" as a concept - a short look at Yahoo's Buzz index (what people are searching for) tells you that its people & celebrities at that whho are the talk (search) of the town.
I am quite sure there is a big business opportunity in getting the celebrities online.

Feedback
Companies are doing this to hear what their users feel by blogging. Most of the new companies launch a product with a blog but even older companies are getting into the act. Examples are the Yahoo search blog and the IE blog. Come to think of it, its the easiest way to hear what your users say & could potentially save millions spent on market research, potentially biased surveys & ethnography. I am not suggesting that those are useless or will go away anytime soon. But this is another medium.

Back to celebrity blogs - if the feedback mechanism can work for corporates, it could potentially do very well for celebrities or at least celebrity projects, as in this case - where Aamir is blogging about his upcoming movie "Mangal Pandey"

For the blogosphere
Celebrity blogs have the potential of introducing blogs to a huge audience of internet users, who have not seen the blogosphere & what it can do. In India, Filmstars & Cricketers(the sport cricket) have a God-like status. Mobs await a cricketer's arrival on airport (regardless of their performance). There is little heard from them & a lot spoken about them - "Celebrity blogs" could help the junta know their heroes better.

For the blogging networks
As i said earlier, I perceive a large business potential in this area. It will not take very long for Aamir's blog to become one of the most popular blogs in the Indian audience. The blog is a showcase for MSN spaces & the best possible way for them to advertise themselves & all the features they have.
For once, I can even think of people paying for trusted content in this form.

Lets wait & watch. Meanwhile i am waiting for the phone booking for INOX in Bangalore to open up so that i can book my tickets for the movie.

What's really cool is that these celebrities get to interact with their real audience directly without any paparazzi in-between. Honest and talented people like Aamir Khan are rare and he's blogging. All I can say is Subscribed!

Oh! The spelling is correct and hence you know it is not a spoof? Not like that mail from the CEO eh?

I dont know,
but given the number of blogs that have quoted it .. might just be.

Even if it is not - it is solving all the above purposes.

If we could also add trust to this .. by say having video/audio snippets from the celebrity besides the photos that are there already .. it would rest that question & bring a lot more value
